Volunteering

Training

Maidstone Mediation provides free training to people interested in becoming volunteer mediators. The training is skills based and comprises of a ten units Basic Skills course followed by supervised practice with a co-mediator. The training can either be done intensively over four days or one evening a week for ten weeks. The training leads to a certificate in Basic Mediation skills.

Requirements

There are no academic requirements for being a volunteer. However, volunteers must be able to demonstrate that they have the ability to be non directive i.e. help the clients solve their own problems and not tell them what to do. They must be able to follow the pattern taught in training for mediation. They must be able to remain non judgemental and not let their own biases and prejudices cause them to take sides and show preference to any particular party.

Workload

Volunteers usually take on one or two cases at a time and make the appointments to suit their own and the clients availability. A case is usually completed within six weeks and takes no more than seven hours mediator time spread over three or four meetings. Maidstone Mediation uses a model of co-mediation i.e. there are usually two mediators allocated to a case working together. Cases are allocated to mediators by the co-ordinator who provides support and advice.
